WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SELECTING A PREFINISHED TIMBER FLOOR?

Convenience

For any floor installation project, furniture, appliances … everything … needs to be moved out of the way. The family of the home, including pets, will live with disruption during the project. That’s a short-term pain that depends on the size of the project. Prefinished hardwood flooring means less of the temporary inconvenience to homeowners that comes with a wood floor installation project.

Design Selection

With prefinished wood flooring, it’s easy to take a short board to compare colors, graining and texture against other design elements you’re considering (e.g. paint colors, rugs, furniture styles and colors).

Time savings

Prefinished floor installation can be completed in less time than a floor that also requires on-site sanding and finishing. Prefinished flooring is ready to use as soon as it’s installed. Put the fridge and furniture right back in place and keep your busy schedule on track.

Minimal dust and odor

Even though dust from sanding can be heavily reduced on-site these days, nothing minimizes dust from work in the house like having that part of the process happen elsewhere. Floor finish, like wall paint, has an odor. Prefinished flooring means the finish is applied, dried and cured at the factory. No finish in the home, no finish odor.

Durability

Factory-finished wood flooring is finished with products that provide durability. But there can be a trade-off. If the finish includes aluminum oxide, is ceramic-fortified, or uses nano-technologies, it can make future sanding and refinishing projects more difficult.

HOW DO I MAINTAIN A BESPOKE TIMBER FLOOR?

Maintenance is a crucial component to keeping your timber floor looking beautiful. Many cleaners can actually damage the coating of the timber and reduce the durability. Every timber floor we send out will have its own maintenance guide, however if you have lost it or need to purchase some more please find all the information below.

Polyurethane

A polyurethane timber floor does not have a demanding cleaning regime. We recommend regular vacuuming, dusting and using the Bona Spray Mop. The specially formulated solution will ensure a clean floor and will not dull or damage the polyurethane. Approximately every 12 months you may want to "refresh" your floor. Simple apply the Bona Wood Floor Refresher with an applicator pad to the clean timber surface.

Oil

If you have an oiled or Hardwax Oiled floor in your home it is important that you use a specific oil cleaner. These cleaners have a small amount of oil in them that will nourish your floor as it cleans. Bona Soap is a great everyday cleaner for oiled floors and can be easily applied with the oil cleaning cartridge in the Bona Spray Mop. Alternatively you can use the cleaner recommended by the coating manufacturer.

It is necessary to apply a maintenance coat onto an oiled floor regularly to keep it looking its best. The durability of oils varies and this coat may be required from 6 monthly - 2 yearly depending on the coating choice and the amount of use the floor receives. From our testing Rubio Monocoat appears to have the best durability with a maintenance coat not required for 18-24 months (depending on use).

We never recommend the use of a steam mop on any timber floor!
